At Light Green Machines, we’re not only committed to ADA compliance — we’re working to redefine what accessibility can look like in next-generation transit vehicles. That’s why we’ve partnered with Cornell University to develop a new kind of entrance ramp system that’s both faster to deploy and easier to maintain.
Traditional ramps often suffer from slow deployment times, mechanical complexity, and bulky designs that restrict boarding in tight urban stops. They’re functional, but not optimized.
Our design goals are clear:
Cut ramp deployment time by over 50 percent
Ensure smooth, non-jarring transitions for wheelchair users and those with mobility devices
Minimize maintenance by simplifying moving parts and using corrosion-resistant materials
Seamlessly integrate into our low-floor composite chassis design
Early lab testing with our Cornell partners has already shown promising results. The new ramp prototype uses a compact actuator system and an innovative folding mechanism that tucks flush with the floor when not in use. This creates a safer, more spacious boarding area — especially useful during peak service hours.
But this isn’t just about mechanical improvements. It’s about dignity. It’s about building vehicles that invite everyone in, without delay or compromise.
The optimized ramp design will be featured in our upcoming Viking 55 bus platform and passed on to future LGM products. It’s one more example of how thoughtful engineering can lead to meaningful, real-world impact.
